Willie Hernandez was born in Aguada, Puerto Rico and signed with the Philadelphia Phillies as an amateur free agent in 1973. He was selected away from the Phillies by the Chicago Cubs in the 1976 Rule V Draft and spent six years in the Cubs organization before being traded back to the Phillies in 1983 and then on to the Detroit Tigers in 1984. Hernandez had a magical 1984 season helping to lead the Tigers to a World Series Championship while earning both League MVP honors as well as the Cy Young award a rare feat for a reliever. Hernandez played five more season and finished his MLB career with the Tigers after the 1989 season. Willie Hernandez was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2012. He passed away on November 20, 2023 at 69 years of age.
