Professional Boxer (1977 – 2006)

Tommy Hearns was born in Grand Junction, Tennessee moving to Detroit at age five. Hearns started Boxing at a young age compiling an amateur record of 155 – 8 before winning a Golden Glove championship in 1977. Hearns turned professional in 1977 and under the direction of Emanuel Steward embarked on a career that would not end until 2006. Hearns was a devastating puncher earning the nickname “The Hitman” as he became the first boxer to win world titles in five weight divisions; welterweight, light middleweight, middleweight, light heavyweight and super middleweight. Hearns was named Fighter of the Year by Ring Magazine and the Boxing Writers Association in 1980 and 1984. His overall record was 61 – 5 with 48 wins coming by knockout. He was ranked #18 by BoxRec ranking of the greatest boxers of all-time. Tommy Hearns was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.
