Steve Smith was born in Highland Park, Michigan. After completing his high school career at Detroit’s Pershing High School, he went on to Michigan State where he graduated as the school’s all-time scoring leader with 2,263 points. Smith was named a two-time first team All-American and led MSU to a Big Ten Championship and a sweet sixteen appearance in 1990. His number “21” was retired by MSU. He was selected fifth overall by the Miami Heat in the 1991 NBA draft. Smith’s 14-year NBA career included stops in six different cities where he earned one NBA championship ring (2003) in addition to other honors, including; NBA All-Rookie team (1992), NBA All-Star (1998) and NBA Sportsmanship (2002). Smith was a member of the Men’s National team that won the gold medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Steve Smith was inducted into the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001 and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2013.
