Steve Fraser was born in Hazel Park, Michigan and went on to win a MHSAA state championship in wrestling at Hazel Park High School before continuing his wrestling career at the University of Michigan, twice earning All-American honors. Fraser went on to win a Gold Medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics in Greco-Roman wrestling in the 198 lb weight class, the first US gold medal ever in Greco-Roman wrestling. Fraser was named USA Wrestling Athlete of the Year in 1984, and was a finalist for the James E. Sullivan Award. Fraser also won a gold medal at the 1983 Pan-American games and was a member of the 1979 and 1982 U.S. world teams, in addition to being the U.S. Nationals freestyle champion in 1984. From 1997 - 2014, Fraser served as U.S. coach of the Greco-Roman wrestling team. Steve Fraser was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1994 and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.
