

Shawn Respert
After starring at Redford Bishop Borgess, Respert went on to play college basketball at Michigan State University, where is career is remembered well today. He was the Spartans’ leading scorer for all four of his seasons at East Lansing (1991-1995), playing for coach Jud Heathcote. He finished his career as MSU’s all-time leading scorer the Big Ten Conference’s second all-time leading scorer.
Following his senior season in 1994-1995, when he averaged 25.6 points per game, Respert was a unanimous first-team All-American, the Big Ten player of the year and the Sporting News and NABC National Player of the Year. In recognition of his all-time great career, his number, 24, is retired by Michigan State.
The eighth overall pick in the NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers, Respert played for four NBA teams and also played internationally, all after surviving cancer. Since his playing career, he has stayed in basketball as a coach and player development executive.
