Roger Penske was born in Shaker Heights, Ohio, spent time working on cars as a teenager, and went on to graduate from Lehigh University. In his early 20’s Penske went on to purchase and race cars. Sports Illustrated named him Sports Car Club of America Driver of the Year in 1961. He retired a few years later and created a racing team in the IndyCar Series as well as NASCAR racing. His team captured its first of 17 Indianapolis 500s in 1969 and the first NASCAR win was in 1973, his teams have won many races at each level in the intervening years. Penske is also a successful businessman and was the Super Bowl XL Committee Chairman. Roger Penske was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1998, the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1995, Auto Racing Hall of Fame, the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2015 and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.
