Rick Leach was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan and grew up in Flint where he attended Flint Southwestern High School exxcelling in football, baseball and basketball earning all-conference honors in each sport. He was a four-year starter at quarterback for the University of Michigan, while also playing baseball for the Wolverines. In football, he led his team to three Big Ten Championships and was named All-Big Ten as a quarterback three times finishing third in Heisman voting in his senior season as well as being named an All-American. In baseball he was the Big Ten batting champion in his junior season and had the rare distinction of being named an All-American in both football and baseball. Leach was selected in the first round of the 1979 MLB draft by the Detroit Tigers and played for the Tigers from 1981 to 1983. He played with the Toronto Blue Jays from 1984 to 1988, ending his career with the Texas Rangers (1989) and the San Francisco Giants (1990). Rick Leach was inducted into the U of M Athletic Hall of Honor in 2009 and was elected to the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2008 and inducted in 2010.
