Leonard Patrick (Red) Kelly
Detroit Red Wings Player (1947 – 1960)
Red Kelly was born in Simcoe, Ontario and attended Doan’s Hollow Public School and St. Michael’s College School. He was signed by the Detroit Red Wings in 1947 and played 13 seasons with the Red Wings where he won eight regular-season championships and four Stanley Cup championships. In 1960 Kelly was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs where he won four additional Stanley Cup championships over the next eight seasons. Kelly was named a first-team All-Star six times, won the Lady Byng Award four times, and won the first James Norris Memorial Trophy as the top defenseman. After his playing career ended, he coached in the NHL for three different team over ten seasons. In 1998, he was ranked ##22 on The Hockey News list of 100 greatest hockey players and had his #4 retired by the Detroit Red Wings in 2019. Red Kelly was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1969 and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1998. Red Kelly passed away on May 2, 2019 at 91 years of age.
