Gordon Arthur (Red) Berenson

Red Berenson was born in Regina, Saskatchewan and played junior hockey before attending the University of Michigan for years earning All-American honors during his senior year while leading the NCAA in scoring with 43 goals. He signed with the Montreal Canadians where he played for five years winning one Stanley Cup Championship before being traded to the New York Rangers and then on to the St. Louis Blues where he became one of the NHL's best players. He was traded to Detroit then back to St. Louis to finish out his 18-year NHL career. After his playing days were over, Berenson went in to coaching, first over three season with the St. Louis Blues of the NHL and then for 33 seasons with the University of Michigan from 1984 until his retirement in 2017. During his U of M coaching tenure, Berenson won 848 games, two NCAA Championships, 22 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, two-time CCHA Coach of the Year among many other awards. Red Berenson was inducted the U of M Athletic Hall of Honor in 1983, and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1996.
