Ray Scott was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and played college basketball at the University of Portland. Scott was selected by the Detroit Pistons as the fourth overall selection in the first round of the 1961 NBA draft. Overall, he spent 11 seasons in the NBA/ABA scoring 11,269 points and grabbing 7,979 rebounds. After his playing days were over, Scott became the Pistons head coach for three and a half seasons, and was the first and so far, only Pistons coach to earn Coach of the Year honors (1974). He was also the head coach at Eastern Michigan for three seasons. During the Pistons 50-year anniversary celebration in 2008 Ray Scott was named one of the “30 All-Time Pistons”, he was was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.
