Pete Karmanos was born in Detroit, Michigan and attended both Henry Ford High School and Wayne State University before going on to help start software company, Compuware with two other partners. During the late 1970’s, Karmanos help co-found the Detroit Compuware Hockey Organization which included all levels of Hockey from recreational to Junior A. Karmanos also owned the Detroit Ambassadors and the Plymouth Whalers who were very successful organizations sending several payers on to the NHL.  Karmanos and his Compuware partners then purchased the Hartford Whalers in 1994 eventually moving them to Raleigh, North Carolina and renaming the franchise to the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes won the Stanley Cup Championship in 2006. Pete Karmanos was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Builder category in 2015 and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.
