Oakland University Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Coach (1979 - present)

Pete Hovland was born in the Santa Clara, California area and attended Chico State where his team won four NCAA Swimming and Diving Team Championships for coach Dr. Ernest Maglischo. Hovland has been coaching at Oakland University since 1979. At the time of his Hall of Fame induction, Hovland’s men’s Swimming and Diving team had won 37 consecutive Conference titles and his women’s team had won 23 consecutive titles. Hovland’s men’s teams have won four NCAA Division II team national championships with 54 individual national champions. He has been named conference coach of the year 23 times. Pete Hovland was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2016.
