Paul Carey was born in Mount Pleasant, Michigan and attended Mount Pleasant High School, before moving on to Central Michigan and Michigan State, graduating in 1950. Following graduation, Carey spent two years in the Army, being released in 1952. Upon his return, Carey resumed his announcing and sportscasting duties at radio stations in Mount Pleasant, Saginaw and eventually at WJR in Detroit. Carey was a staff announcer for nine years before becoming Assistant Sports Director and then produced the Detroit Tigers Radio Network. He teamed with Ernie Harwell on Tigers games from 1973 – 1991, also serving as a play-by-play announcer for the Detroit Pistons for six seasons as well as hosting a High School football and basketball show for 35 years. Carey was named the Michigan Sportscaster of the year, six times during the 1970’s – 1980’s, in addition to many other honors. Paul Carey was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1992. He passed away on April 12, 2016 at 88 years of age.
