Richaard Night Train Lane was born in Austin, Texas and attended Scottsbluff Junior College playing one season of football. He then enrolled in the U.S. Army and served four years, he played football for the base team (Fort Ord) earning All-Army second-team in 1949 and first-team honors in 1951. He received a tryout with the Los Angeles Rams and excelled, playing in all 12 games and set an NFL single-season record with 14 interceptions. He continued with this level of play for the remainder of his career. Known as a ferocious tackler over his 14-year NFL career spent with three teams. He was named to the Pro Bowl seven times, a seven-time First Team All-Pro and twice was the NFL Interception leader. After his career he was hired to manage the Detroit Police Athletic League (PAL) for 17 years. Richard (Night Train) Lane was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1974, the NFL 1950’s All-Decade Team, the 75th Anniversary All-Time Team in 1994 and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1988. He passed away on January 29, 2002 at 73 years of age.
