Micki King was born in Pontiac, Michigan and attended Pontiac Central High School. She began diving at age ten at the local YMCA and competed in and won AAU meets throughout her high school years. She attended the University of Michigan from 1961 – 1965 and competed with the men’s team. King was the dominant force in women’s diving in the U.S. from 1965 to 1972 winning ten U.S. national diving championships. She won the gold medal in the 1972 Munich Olympics in the three-meter springboard event. King served for 26 years with the U.S. Air Force Academy, retiring in 1992 as a full colonel. During her time at the Air Force Academy, King coached the diving team, with eleven of her divers earning All-American honors. Micki King was inducted into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame, the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame, the International Swimming Hall of Fame, the University of Michigan Athletic Hall of Honor and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1993.
