Mateen Cleaves was born in Flint, Michigan and after a very successful career at Flint Northern High School where he earned McDonald’s All-American honors (1996) was a highly regarded recruit that chose Michigan State. He was a three-time captain for the Spartans and led them to the 2000 NCAA National Championship. He was twice named Big Ten Player of the year and is MSU’s only three-time basketball All-American. His number “12” has been retired by Michigan State. He was selected 14th overall by the Detroit Pistons in the 2000 NBA draft. He played in the NBA over parts of six seasons. Mateen Cleaves was inducted into the Michigan State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2011 and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2013.
