Leo Harvey Diegel
Professional Golfer (1916 – 1934)
Leo Diegel was born in Gratiot Township, Michigan. He first started caddying at age 10 and won his first tournament at age 17 (1916 Michigan Open). Over the course of his career, Diegel won 37 events, 30 of which were PGA events. His win total included two Major Championships, the 1928 and 1929 PGA Championship. He won four Canadian Opens (1924, 1925, 1928, 1929) and the 1925 Florida Open (billed as the "Greatest Field Of Golfers Ever to Play in Florida"). He was selected to the first four Ryder Cup teams (1927, 1929, 1931, 1933). He won at least one tour event every year from 1921 through 1930. Leo Diegel was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2003 and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. He passed away on May 5, 1951 at 51 years of age.
