Julie Krone was born in Benton Harbor, Michigan, spending her childhood as a show horse rider in competitions in western Michigan. She was inspired to become a thoroughbred jockey by the career of Steve Cauthen, winning her first race in 1981 and over the years became a well-known racing personality. She was the only woman to win riding championships at Belmont Park, Gulfstream Park, Monmouth Park and many other tracks. Over her career she won 3,704 races. Krone is the is the only female jockey to have won a Triple Crown Race (1993 Belmont Stakes) and a Breeders Cup Race (2003). She has appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, one of only eight jockeys to be so honored as well as being awarded the 1993 ESPY award as Female Athlete of the Year. Julie Krone was inducted into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame in 2000, National Women’s Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.
