Jim Devellano was born in Toronto, Canada. Always a hockey fan, he spent a great deal of time watching junior hockey games while working as a claims adjustor for the Canadian government. Devellano eventually landed a scouting position with the St. Louis Blues and then the New York Islanders. While with the Islanders, Devellano won two Stanley Cup Championships as a scout and another as assistant general manager. He was hired by the Red Wings in 1982 and has served in a variety of roles from General Manager to Senior Vice-President, while with the Red Wings he has been a part of four Stanley Cup Championships. Devellano was hired by the Detroit Tigers in 2001 to serve as Senior Vice-President, a role he still holds as of the 2018 season. In 2009, Devellano earned the Lester Patrick Award for outstanding service to the sport of hockey. Jim Devellano was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010 was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.
