Jim Northrup was born in Breckenridge, Michigan graduating from nearby St. Louis High School. Northrup went on to Alma College where he played five sports. He was a small college All-American quarterback, played basketball, golf, and ran track but baseball was his great love. He signed with the Tigers organization in 1961 getting promoted to the major league club in 1964. His hitting ability and versatility in the field made him a valuable player. He was a key member of the 1968 Detroit Tigers World Series championship, playing in all seven games, hitting the game-winning triple in game 7. He concluded his playing career with the Baltimore Orioles and Montreal Expos. Jim Northrup was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. He passed away on June 8, 2011 at 71 years of age.
