Jim Kaat was born in Zeeland, Michigan and played for Hope College prior to signing as an amateur free agent by the Washington Senators. While he played for five different franchises, he was primarily known for his work with the Minnesota Twins. Known as an outstanding fielding pitcher, Kaat won 16 Gold Glove Awards, in addition to being named a three-time All-Star. During his career, Kaat won 283 games with 2,461 strikeouts and an Earned Run Average of 3.45. He was a member of the 1982 St. Louis Cardinals that won a World Series. Following his retirement as an active player, Kaat went into the broadcast booth for over 20 years. Jim Kaat was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2022 and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.
