Jean Hoxie was born in Grout Township, Michigan and was a tennis player and coach. Jean along with her husband Jerry under the banner of the Hamtramck Cosmos developed 16 state titleholders in singles tennis and 13 state titleholders in doubles tennis. Between 1949 and 1969, members of their program won 18 boys individual state championships. Her Hamtramck boys high school teams won 16 state titles in 17 years. The Hoxies established the first tennis camp in the United States. In all she coached more than 300 U.S. National tennis champions and one world champion. Jean Hoxie was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1965. She passed away on May 6, 1970 at 72 years of age.
