John Sherratt (Black Jack) Stewart

Detroit Red Wings Player (1938 – 1950)

John Stewart was born in Pilot Mound, Manitoba and started his hockey career with the Portage Terriers of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. In his second season he was spotted by a scout who convinced James Norris, the Red Wings owner to sign him. Once inserted into the Red Wings starting lineup, Stewart quickly established himself as a physical presence. By his fifth season, Stewart was named to the NHL First All-Star Team as a defenseman and helped the Red Wings win both the regular season title and the Stanley Cup Championship. Stewart served in the Canadian Armed Forces in World War II and upon his return continued to dominate his position while earning four additional All-Star selections. He won a second Stanley Cup Championship with the Red Wings before being traded to the Chicago Black Hawks for two seasons before retiring to pursue a coaching career. John Stewart was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1964 and the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. He passed away on May 25, 1983 at 66 years of age.
