Herman Moore was born in Danville, Virginia and was a three-sport star (basketball, football and track) while attending George Washington High School. He attended the University of Virginia participating in football and track where he was a consensus All-American selection in his senior season. He was selected by the Detroit Lions as the tenth overall pick in the 1991 NFL draft where he spent the next 11 seasons. At the time of his retirement, he held numerous Lions receiving records with 670 receptions for 9,174 yards and 62 touchdowns. Moore was a four-time Pro Bowl selection and a three-time All-Pro and had three 100-catch seasons. Herman Moore was elected to the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2008 and inducted in 2010.
