Henry Carr was born in Montgomery, Alabama but moved to Detroit with his family at a very young age and was a state champion sprinter in the 100-yard dash at Northwestern High School. He went on to attend Arizona State University where he won three National Championships. His greatest fame came in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics where he would go on to win the gold medal in the 200 meters in Olympic record time then anchored the 4 x 400 meter relay team to Olympic gold also in world record time. After his track and field career was complete, he was drafted by the New York Giants in the fourth round of the 1965 NFL draft and went on to play three seasons for the Giants. Henry Carr was inducted into the USA Track and Field Hall of Fame and the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. He passed away on May 29, 2015 at 73 years of age.
