Guy Virgil Houston
High School Football Coach, Principal, Athletic Director (Flint Northern – 1928 – 1963)
Guy Houston was born in Oklahoma and moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan and was a three-sport athlete at Grand Rapids Central High School before moving on to play football at Western Michigan University. After graduation he coached at Manistique and Menominee in the Upper Peninsula. In 1928, Houston was hired by Flint Northern High School where he spent the next twenty-four years as football coach and after retiring from coaching in 1951 remained another eleven years as Principal and Athletic Director. His Flint Northern football teams won 148 games lost 41 and tied 13. His teams went undefeated ten times, won twelve Saginaw Valley Conference Championships and compiled winning streaks of 28 and 26 games. During his tenure as Athletic Director, Flint Northern won five Class A State Basketball titles, and three State Track titles. Guy Houston was inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1966, the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1983, the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame in 1980 and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1980. He passed away on December 19, 1972 at 75 years of age.
