Gordon Johncock was born in Hastings, Michigan. He won his first United States Auto Club (USAC) race in Milwaukee in 1965 and as well as six additional races before winning his first Indianapolis 500 in 1973. Johncock won the 1976 USAC National Championship on the final race of the season. After a number of close finishes during the late 1970’s Johncock finally broke through again on victory lane in the 1982 Indy 500 by .16 seconds, the fourth closest finish at that time. In all. Johncock won 17 USAC Championship races and an additional five PPG Indy Car World Series races. Johncock’s final race was the 1992 Indy 500. Gordon Johncock was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1999, the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2002 and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1992.
