George Gervin was born in Detroit, Michigan and attended King High School where he averaged 31 points and 20 rebounds in his senior season. After graduation, he enrolled at Long Beach State before transferring to Eastern Michigan University where he averaged 29.5 points per game as a sophomore. Gervin signed with the Virginia Squires of the American Basketball Association (ABA). During his second season with the Squires, Gervin was sold to the San Antonio Spurs where he enjoyed an eleven-year career before playing his final season with the Chicago Bulls. The Spurs were one of four teams absorbed into the NBA in 1976. Gervin would go on to lead the NBA in scoring in four seasons, was a nine-time NBA All-Star, a three-time ABA All-Star, and a five-time first-team All-NBA player. During his career he scored 26,595 points averaging 25.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. He was named to the ABA All-Time team and the NBA’s 50th Anniversary team. George Gervin had his number 44 retired by the Spurs and his number 24 retired by Eastern Michigan. George Gervin was inducted into the E-Club Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993, the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1996, and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
