George Allen was born in Nelson County, Virginia and his family moved to St. Clair Shores, MI, where he lettered in football, track, and basketball at Lakeshore High School. After graduating from Michigan State Normal College (now Eastern Michigan University). He began a football coaching career that took him to head coaching positions at Morningside College and then on to Whittier College. His first NFL head coaching position was with the Los Angeles Rams for five seasons leading the Rams to two Conference Championship games. He moved on to the Washington Redskins for seven seasons, where his teams appeared in five Conference Championship games. In all, Allen earned two coach of the year honors and his NFL teams never had a losing record. George Allen was inducted into the Washington Redskins Ring of Honor as well as the Pro Football Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2012. He passed away on December 31, 1990 at 73 years of age.
