Fielding Yost was born in Fairview, West Virginia and initially attended Ohio Normal School, now called Ohio Northern University for three years where he played baseball. A few years later he attended West Virginia University to study law and embarked on a football career. His coaching career began at age 26 with a position at Ohio Wesleyan before moving on to Nebraska, Kansas, Stanford and then Michigan in succeeding years. It was at Michigan that Yost really excelled as a coach staying for 25 seasons during which time he compiled a 165 – 29 – 10 record. His 1901 – 1905 “point-a-minute” teams combined for a 55 – 1 – 1 record, winning four national championships with the 1901 team being undefeated and unscored upon. Yost teams won two additional national championships in 1918 and 1923. His impact was not limited just to the University of Michigan as there are at least 75 former players and coaches who went on to coach elsewhere. Yost also served in the role of Athletic Director from 1921 – 1940. Fielding Yost was inducted into the inaugural class of the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951, the University of Michigan Athletic Hall of Honor in 1979 and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1955. He passed away on August 20, 1946 at 75 years of age.
