Earl Morrall was born in Muskegon, Michigan leading Muskegon High School to a state football championship in 1951. He went on to attend Michigan State where he played football and baseball for three seasons, leading the Spartans football team to a 9 – 1 record and a victory over the UCLA Bruins in the 1956 Rose Bowl as well as being named an All-American. He also played in the College World Series as a shortstop and third baseman. He was offered an opportunity to play professional baseball but chose football. Morrall was the number two overall selection in the 1956 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers and went on to a 21-year NFL career with six different teams. Morrall’s career was spent between starting and backup roles. He was on three Super Bowl winning teams, was named to two Pro Bowls selected as the NFL Most Valuable player and was a two-time All-Pro. Earl Morrall was inducted into the Michigan State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1992 and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1979. He passed away on April 25, 2014 at 79 years of age.
