Dr. Allen Byron Stowe
Kalamazoo College Tennis Coach (1928 – 1957)
Dr. Allen Stowe was born in Allegan County, Michigan and went on to graduate from Kalamazoo College in 1920 before going on to Clark College where he pursued his Ph.D. At the completion of his degree, Dr. Stowe went on to serve in a variety of roles at Olivet College including coaching tennis before returning to his alma mater and taking over the tennis program among his many responsibilities. Successful from the very start, his tennis teams captured Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) titles from 1931 – 1933. Starting in 1936, his teams went on an incredible streak of winning 18 consecutive conference titles and twenty-four overall. They also compiled a dual-match winning streak of 123 consecutive matches. Dr. Stowe was also instrumental in bringing the national boys 16 and 18 tournament to Kalamazoo. Dr. Allen Stowe was inducted into the inaugural class of the Kalamazoo College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986 and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1959. He passed away on February 23, 1957 at 60 years of age.
