Dave Bing was born in Washington D.C. attending Syracuse University where he excelled in basketball, earning All-American honors in his senior year. He was selected by the Detroit Pistons as the second overall pick in the first round of the 1966 NBA draft. Bing was named the NBA’s Rookie of the Year in 1967 and was named to the All-Rookie team. The next year he led the entire NBA in scoring with a 27.1 point per game average. In total, Bing played in seven NBA All Star games and was named to the All-NBA first team twice in his career. The Pistons celebrated his career accomplishments by retiring his #21 jersey. After his playing days were over, Bing became a successful businessman in the Detroit area by founding Bing Steel, later called the Bing Group and served as the mayor of Detroit from 2009 – 2013. Dave Bing was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1984.
