Daedra Charles-Furlow was born in Detroit, Michigan and graduated from St. Martin De Porres High School. She attended the University of Tennessee and played basketball for the legendary Pat Summitt. Daedra was a key component of the 1989 – 1991 Lady Volunteer basketball teams that won two NCAA National Championships (1989, 1991) as well as winning the 1991 Wade Trophy symbolic of the top women’s collegiate basketball player. After her collegiate career Charles-Furlow went on to represent the USA on the women’s national team that went on to win the Bronze medals in the 1992 Olympics and the 1994 FIBA World Championships. She played one season for the L.A. Sparks of the WNBA and then went on to become an assistant coach for the University of Detroit, Auburn, and Tennessee. She was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. Daedra Charles-Furlow was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2018. She passed away on April 14, 2018 at 49 years of age.
