Clarke Scholes was born in Detroit, Michigan and attended Redford High School where he won city league titles in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle events. He went on to attend Michigan State and was a three-time NCAA Champion in the 100-yard freestyle and a five-time All-American. Clarke went on to compete in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics winning a gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle. He also won gold medals at the 1955 Pan-American Games in Mexico City in the 100-meter freestyle and the 4x100-meter medley relay events. Clarke Scholes was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1980, the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. Clarke Scholes passed away on Feb. 5, 2010 at 79 years of age.
