Melvin R. “Chick” Harbert
Professional Golfer
Chick Harbert was born in Dayton, Ohio and served in the U. S. Air Force during World War II. Harbert was a professional golfer who won seven times on the PGA tour, including the 1954 PGA Championship as well as ten other championships many of which were in Michigan. Harbert was known as an excellent match-play golfer who compiled a 24 – 10 record in match play events between 19411 and 1954. Harbert was a playing captain of the 1955 U. S. Ryder Cup team, winning his only match. He participated in two official Senior PGA Tour tournaments after age 50 before retiring. Chick Harbert was inducted into the PGA Hall of Fame in 1968 and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1989. He passed away on September 1, 1992 at 77 years of age.
