Charlie Maxwell was born in Paw Paw, Michigan and played baseball for Western Michigan University in 1945 before being drafted into the U.S. Army. Paw Paw served two years in the Army before spending parts of seven seasons in the minor leagues. He debuted in the Major Leagues with the Boston Red Sox at the end of the 1950 season where he spent parts of 5 seasons with the Red Sox and the Orioles before being sold to the Detroit Tigers in 1955. While with the Tigers from 1955 to 1962, Maxwell was a key contributor both at the plate and in the field, leading the Tigers in home runs on three separate occasions. He was traded to the White Sox in 1962 where he finished out his MLB career in 1964. During his 14-season MLB career, Maxwell played in 1,133 games batting .264 with 148 home runs and 532 RBIs, he was selected to two All-Star teams. Charlie Maxwell was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.
