Carol Hutchins was born in Lansing, Michigan and attended Everett High School where she was an all-city basketball performer. She attended Michigan State where she played both basketball and softball, helping lead the Spartans to an AIAW National Softball Championship. After college graduation, she embarked on a softball coaching career starting at Ferris State and then on to the University of Michigan where she started in 1985 and as of 2020 is still going strong. Hutchins’ teams have won 19 Big Ten regular season championships, nine conference tournament championships, 18 NCAA regional championships and one NCAA Softball National Championship (2005). Hutchins has been named Big Ten Coach of the Year on 17 occasions and National Coach of the Year twice. In 2016, she became the winningest head coach in Division I Softball history with over 1570 wins, her teams have never had a losing season. Carol Hutchins was inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2006 and inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.
