Robert Pormann (Bob) Ufer

Bob Ufer was born in Cleveland, Ohio but grew up in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania. As a high school track athlete, Ufer was a member of a relay team that broke the world scholastic record in the 440-yard relay, earning he and his teammates a permanent place on the Penn Relays Wall of Fame. Ufer went on to star at the University of Michigan, where he set eight freshman records and set the world indoor record in the 440-yard run. He was a three-time Big Ten Champion in the indoor 440-yard run. After graduation, Ufer went on to broadcast the University of Michigan football games for 36 seasons, until his death in 1981. Bob Ufer was part of the inaugural class inducted into the University of Michigan Athletic Hall of Honor in 1978 and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1982. He passed away on October 26, 1981 at 61 years of age.
