Robert Winfield (Bob) Carey

Michigan State Football, Basketball, Track (1949 – 1952)

Bob Carey was born in Charlevoix, Michigan and along with his twin brother Bill helped the Charlevoix Rayders to an undefeated unscored upon football season in 1945. The brothers went on to Michigan State where Bob was a standout in football, basketball and track and field and is one of only ten athletes to earn nine athletic letters (three in each sport). He helped lead the 1951 Spartan football team to an undefeated season earning consensus All-American honors in both 1950 and 1951. Carey also won the Big Ten Shot Put championship and placed third in the 1951 NCAA Championships. As a senior, Bob Carey won the Chester L. Brewer Award for “distinguished performance in athletics and scholarship and for possessing high character”. He was drafted number thirteen overall in the 1952 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams and played six seasons in the NFL with the Rams and the Chicago Bears. In 2001, he was chosen to be on Michigan State’s All-Time Team by Athlon Sports. Bob Carey was inducted into the inaugural class of the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1992 and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1990. He passed away on October 25, 1988 at 58.years of age.
