William Edward (Bill) Muncey

Bill Muncey was born in Detroit, Michigan and attended Rollins College. Muncey began his boat racing career in 1949 and had his first win at the Gold Cup in 1956, followed by another in 1957. Between 1960 and 1962, Muncey won 14 races and continued to be successful up until the time of his death in 1981. In more than three decades of hydroplane racing Muncey won 62 races winning eight Gold Cups, seven U.S. National Championships and four World Championships being named driver of the year seven times. Bill Muncey was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2004, the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1989 and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1983. He passed away on October 18, 1981 at 52 years of age.
