Barney McCosky was born in Coal Run, Pennsylvania and moved with his family to Detroit at age 4 attending Southwestern High School where he was All-City and captain in both baseball and basketball. McCosky started his baseball career with the hometown Tigers in 1939 and enjoyed great success over his first few years batting over .300 in six of his first seven seasons. McCosky joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 serving in World War II until his discharge in 1945. Upon his return, McCosky was soon dealt to the Philadelphia Athletics, finishing out his career with the Cincinnati Reds and the Cleveland Indians. Barney McCosky was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. He passed away on September 6, 1996 at 79 years of age.
