Alan Trammell was born in Garden Grove, California and graduated from Kearny High School in San Diego. Trammell was selected in the second round of the 1976 MLB draft by the Detroit Tigers playing his entire 20-year career with the Tigers. By the start of the 1978 season Trammel became a fixture in the middle of the Tigers infield through the 1996 season and would team up with second baseman Lou Whitaker to form one of the greatest and longest running (1,918 games) double play combinations in baseball history. Trammell was a six-time All-Star, four-time Gold Glove Award winner, a three-time Silver Slugger Award winner, and a key member of the 1984 World Series champions when he won the MVP Award. During his career, Trammell would collect 2,365 hits with 185 home runs and a career batting average of .285. After his retirement as a player, Trammel would come back and manage the Tigers from 2003 through 2005. Alan Trammell had his number "3" retired by the Tigers, was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2018 and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.
