Tom Gage was born in Detroit, Michigan and after graduating from Washington and Lee University in 1970 began his sports writing career with The Times-Picayune in New Orleans, La. Tom found his way back to Detroit, spending 39 years on the sports staff of the Detroit News as well as 36 years as the beat writer for the Detroit Tigers. Known as a master storyteller, Gage estimates he has written over 11 million words describing the Tigers, and in 2015 was voted the J.G. Taylor Spink award by the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) and was enshrined in the writer’s wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Tom Gage was inducted into Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.
