Ted Simmons was born in Highland Park, Michigan and graduated from Southfield High School in 1967. Simmons was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round of the 1967 MLB draft. In September of 1968 while a student at the University of Michigan during the weekdays, Simmons would spend the weekends wiith the Cardinals as they embarked on winning the National League pennannt. Simmons embarked on a 21-year MLB career, primarily with St. Louis but also including Milwaukee and Atlanta. He was considered one of the best hitting catchers in baseball history and was an eight-time All-Star. He batted over .300 in seven seasons, hit over 20 home runs in six different seasons and accumulated 2,472 hits in his career. Simmons caught two no-hitters during his St. Louis career. Ted Simmons was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.
