Rex Cawley was born in Highland Park, Michigan and attended Farmington High School where his record time in the 100-yard dash, set in 1959, still stands. He was also the Track and Field News ”High School Athlete of the Year” in 1959. Rex attended the University of Southern California where he won the NCAA Championship in the 400m hurdles in 1963 as well as the AAU championships in the 400m hurdles in 1963 and 1965. Cawley won an Olympic gold medal in the 400m hurdles in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Rex Cawley was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.
