Ray Lane was born in Detroit, Michigan and played baseball and basketball at Mackenzie High School before moving on to Michigan State where he played baseball while earning his communications degree. Lane teamed with Ernie Harwell on Tigers broadcasts from 1967 – 1972, at various other times he also broadcast Detroit Lions, Pistons, Red Wings, the University of Michigan, Michigan State and the University of Detroit games. He was the sports director at both WJBK television and later at WKDB. Lane was named Michigan Sportscaster of the Year in 1969 and 1980 and is a past president and honorary lifetime member of the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association where he was presented the Ty Tyson Award for Excellence in 2003 and the Ernie Harwell Lifetime Contribution Award in 2014. Ray Lane was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.
