Mitchell Jack (Mickey) Stanley
Detroit Tigers Player (1964 – 1978)
Mickey Stanley was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan and was a three-sport star at Ottawa Hills High School. He made his Major League debut with the Tigers in 1964, spending his entire 15-year MLB career with the Detroit Tigers. Known for his excellent defensive skills, speed and ability to get a great jump on the ball, he earned four Gold Glove awards for the Tigers. His willingness to switch positions and selfless play helped the Tigers win the 1968 World Series as Manager Mayo Smith moved Stanley from the outfield to shortstop allowing Al Kaline to return to the lineup after recovering from injury. He ended his career with a .248 batting average, 117 home runs and 500 runs batted in. Mickey Stanley was inducted into the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame in 1996 and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1994.
