Lloyd Carr was born in Hawkins County, Tennessee before moving with his family to Riverview, Michigan. Carr quarterbacked the Riverview Pirates to a State Championship in 1962, moving on to the University of Missouri where he played both football and baseball for three seasons. He then attended Northern Michigan University for his M.A. degree quarterbacking them to an undefeated season. His football coaching career included multiple stops at Michigan High Schools, then on to assistant coaching positions at a number of colleges. He spent 15 seasons at the University of Michigan prior to becoming the Wolverines head coach in 1995. During his 13-year head coaching career, Carr’s record was 122 – 40, winning five Big Ten Championships, the 1997 National Championship as well as being named the national coach of the year for the 1997 season. During Carr’s tenure, many of his players won National awards, including the Heisman trophy (Charles Woodson) in 1997. Lloyd Carr was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2011, the U of M Athletic Hall of Honor in 2015 and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.
