Joe Falls was born in New York City and at the age of 17 took a job as a copy boy for the Associated Press (AP). After eight years he moved to the AP’s Detroit bureau and then on to the Detroit Times where he was assigned to cover the Tigers. In 1960 he moved over to the Detroit Free Press covering the Tigers until 1978. His last move saw him go to the Detroit News until his retirement in 2003. At the Detroit News he also became a columnist and Sports Editor, Falls also had weekly columns that appeared in The Sporting News and The Hockey News. During his career, Joe Falls won many awards including the J.G. Taylor Spink Award from the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Falls also authored books on the Boston Marathon and Tiger Stadium. Joe Falls was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. He passed away on August 11, 2004 at 76 years of age.
